News from January 2017

Famous Thunderbirds
On Tuesday, December 27th, Ester, our Animal Science program's donkey, gave birth to our newest member of the MVU family, Elmer.  Ester and her foal are celebrities now.  For about a month, Ester, and later on Ester and Elmer, could be viewed on a live webcam.  People in our local community and all over tuned in to watch Ester's progress, and get a first glimpse of Elmer.  They were even on the news.   Soon our sheep will be giving birth to lambs, so stay tuned into our webpage and social media for updates.

Grade 7 Gift Exchange
Our seventh grade students have been participating in a international pen friend opportunity with students all over the world.  When they returned from the holiday vacation, they were able to see the results of their gift exchange.  Students in Denmark received a package from MVU with pancake mix and real Vermont maple syrup.
Our seventh graders received packages from Brazil and Portugal as well.

Grade 8 Social Studies
8th Grade Social Studies students were introduced to the causes, fighting tactics, and battles of the French and Indian War. To connect this discussion to today, Mr Sumner, who is a Marine veteran of the Iraq War, talked about the training he went through to prepare him for combat.  Students were able to ask questions of Mr Sumner and try on some of the gear used by today's military.

Elective Fair and Registration
Beginning January 12th, and continuing through January 20th, students in grades 8-11 attended our annual Elective Fair, to kick off the registration process for the 2017-18 school year.  Students were able to visit booths for each department and talk with teachers about their options for courses next year.  They even got to visit with Ester and Elmer at the Ag Science booth.

Distracted Driving
Students in Ms. Gates Driver Education classes were able to take part in a simulation of distracted driving, thanks to guest speakers from the state.

Math Studio
As part of our ongoing professional development in Math, our teachers participated in a Math Studio session in early January.  During these sessions, teachers are able to plan, observe one another, and receive training.  This time, the students we worked with were tasked with finding the quickest route to a Taco Stand using their knowledge of rate and the Pythagorean Theorem.

Field Studies Update
Our Field Studies program has been busy, including a recent trip to the Vermont Bird Museum
in Huntington.

Also, Field Studies students will be Big Change Round-Up Bandits. They will be getting their kits shortly and are looking forward to taking part in this worthwhile cause that supports the University of Vermont Children's Hospital.

Inauguration Trip
Six students and four faculty members traveled to the Presidential Inauguration along with students from Spaulding.  While there, they viewed the historic event and also took in the sights of our nation's capital.

Physical Education Intern
This semester, our Physical Education department will be joined by our new intern Miss Tessa Masset.  Miss Masset is a familiar face at MVU, having led our Crossroads/Afterhours programs as well as working as a paraprofessional. Please take a moment to read her letter of introduction and welcome her into her new role.

Science Fair
On Thursday, January 19th, MVU held its annual Science Fair.  This year's fair was the biggest yet, with over 100 student participants.  During the judging deliberations, students and parents were treated to a science demonstration by Aylana Westcom, Miss Vermont 2015.  We'd like to thank the coordinator, Rich Ballard, members of the Science Department, and judges for making this great academic event a proud tradition at our school.

Music Festival
Students from MVU are participating in this year's District Music Festival at BFA.  Here are some photographs of their rehearsal for the concert to be held on the evening of Friday, January 27th.
